Chicory Growing Tips and Advice

Chicory is useful both in salads and as a coffee substitute. Chicory needs lots of sun and rich loam or compost.

Here's a kit with everything you need to get started with organic herb gardening from Clean Air Gardening.

Planting Chicory

Sow seeds in the spring about six weeks after the last frost about ¼ inch deep and 3 inches apart. You can thin seedlings about 8 inches apart. Weed and water constantly. If you wish to propagate your chicory after you’ve grown it, bury the roots of the plant that you’ve trimmed down in the fall diagonally in moist sand and place the containers in a cool, dark room. Cut off outer leaves carefully when you harvest your chicory. If you want to grow roots for the coffee substitute, sow the seeds as for salad greens and dig up the roots about four months after you plant them.

Days to Harvest: 65 days (leaves); 110 days (roots)
Days to Germinate: 8-21 days

Considering going caffeine free? Try this chicory and dandelion coffee substitute.
